Human civilization has always had special interest in ghosts and paranormal activities. Travel to any corner of the world and you would find haunted places, islands, mansions by the dozens. While some have stories of bloodbath and killings around them others are simply based on legends. In fact a tribe of people known as ‘ghost hunters’ thrive on exploring these scariest and spookiest places. Here we (Darryl Denicola and the reader) take a look at seven most haunted places in the world where it would take some good amount of courage on your part to visit.
Tower of London, London, England
There is no other place on earth which attracts as much attention from the ghost hunters as the Tower of London. It has a bloodied past stretching over nine centuries and has some of the most famous people in England’s history buried in there. From Anne Boleyn to Mary the famous Queen of Scots and many other royals and nobles are buried within the tower and there have been regular sightings of royal ghosts in this place.
Poveglia Island, Venice, Italy
A small island located in the Venetian Lagoon between Venice and Lido. It was once used as a confinement zone for people suffering from plague to prevent its outbreak in the mainland in 1793 and then in 1922 it was used as an asylum for mentally ill patients. Sounds perfect ingredients for ghosts’ stories. For ghost hunters it has been a kind of Mecca over the years and we regularly hear stories about strange occurrences in this place.
Castle of Good Hope, Cape Town, South Africa
The 17th century castle served as the base for the Dutch East India Company during the early days of colonial exploration. Most of the ships from Europe to Asia and Far East made a stopover here. There are stories of Ggovernor Pieter Gysbert van Noodt’s ghosts in the castle who died under mysterious circumstances. There have been regular sightings of this which has only added to the legend.
Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh, Scotland
You don’t need to chase ghosts in Scotland as you find them in all castle that dot this land. The most famous would surely have to be the 12th-century Edinburgh Castle that served as a fortress and has seen deaths and murders throughout its history. Guests have often reported of hearing piper’s music in the halls which is said to be played by a piper who died in the castle many centuries ago.
Alcatraz, San Francisco, United States
You know the history of this place and its criminality having watched the movie The Rock. But Alcatraz is also a hotbed of paranormal activities. With dozens of prisoners having died there when it was an active prison and tourists visiting this place often hear screams. There are also stories about people hearing footsteps of prisoners in Alcatraz making it one of the spookiest places in the United States.
Aradale Asylum, Ararat, Victoria, Australia
When a place counts for over 13000 deaths and many of them not due to natural causes there ought to be scary ghost stories. Opened in 1867 this asylum housed thousands of inmates many of whom died in strange circumstances. There are stories about the ghost of Nurse Kerry and regular sightings of her ghost in the women’s wing.
Bhangarh Fort, Rajasthan, India
Often said to be the most haunted place in India with a strong belief that anybody entering this place at night won’t ever come out. Legend had it that the fort was cursed by an old man when the residents built it higher than his and there is no logical explanation to the fact that once flourishing fort suddenly turned into ruins.
